Real Weddings: Heather & Katie

Real Weddings couple: Heather & Katie

DIY florals, a well-timed goose honk, and one sharp Georgie navy suit - Heather & Katie's wedding in Arizona was love-filled and totally their own.

Tell us about yourselves! (Where do you live, what do you do for work and fun, etc.)

We live in Phoenix, AZ, with a house full of rescue pets. Heather works for the Phoenix Symphony as the Head Music Librarian, and Katie works a whole gaggle of jobs while finishing up her PsyD dissertation. We both love reading, traveling, women's sports, and supporting the local arts—Broadway, concerts, art museums and classes, etc. Katie's one true love is indulging her curiosity and creativity in various DIY projects, while Heather has been a devoted skater on the Arizona Roller Derby team for nearly a decade. Katie loves planning the logistics and spreadsheets for everything in our lives, and Heather makes sure we cook at home and eat vegetables instead of Katie's default of cereal or PB&J’s for every meal. (If you're familiar with the reference, we are each the Samuel and the Darshen in separate arenas.)

How did you two meet?

Hinge! Katie was fresh out of a relationship and decided to go on first dates for four days in a row to have fun and get back out there. Heather was the very first of those dates, and clearly it stuck.

What was important to you in planning your wedding day?

It needed to be personal and thoughtful—no generic details. We value being eco-friendly so all the plates, napkins, cups, etc. were compostable and the water came in recyclable cans. Mostly we wanted to spend time with friends and family, eat good food (our friend's wood-fired pizza business catered and we had an ice cream sundae bar instead of cake), and go to sleep at a decent time so we wrapped everything up at 9:30pm. Perfection. Also, Katie did all the flowers and was not interested in outsourcing that as it's one of her favorite creative hobbies. Her goal was to create a bridal bouquet as big as she could feasibly carry, and she succeeded swimmingly. We also scheduled a separate gathering the next morning at a local bookstore-coffee shop (@changinghands) so we could more casually mingle with friends and family, especially people visiting from out of town, and that was a 10/10 idea.

How did you go about choosing what to wear for the wedding day?

As committed lesbians, we both separately followed Kirrin Finch for years and knew immediately it was where we'd be buying Heather's suit. (We're not just saying that because it's Kirrin Finch asking us this question.) Katie is an avid thrifter and bought everything secondhand, which was a months-long quest she thoroughly enjoyed. Her goal was to feel bridal but also be a bit irreverent (see: pearl bustier).

How did you feel when you first saw yourself in your wedding suit?

Heather isn't big on fashion or shopping, but has very particular taste when it comes to fit, fabric, and vibes. When she first put on her suit, she immediately felt so handsome! It was exactly what she wanted. Katie loved watching her pose and smile at herself in the mirror and could tell she felt good in what she was wearing.

What were some of the most special memories from your wedding day?

When we read this question, we both looked at each other and said, "All of it!" It's too hard to pick a favorite. If Katie has to choose, it's when the geese in the lake all honked in the middle of the ceremony. Also, allegedly, a bat flew overhead while we said our vows. Dreamy!

Any advice for other couples planning their wedding?

Do whatever you want! DIY everything, outsource everything—whatever. Also, have delicious pizza for dinner. And if you're getting married locally, stay at a hotel if you can.

Anything else you'd like to share about wedding planning, your wedding day, or your love story?

Love works differently for everyone, but in our case, being together was the easiest and most obvious decision we ever made. Neither of us ever felt any doubts since we first met, which we'd like to credit to each having a strong sense of self (and quality therapists).
